House - Neolithic

This Neolithic House Site, No. 1, is part of Eogan's Phase 3 Decorated Pottery complex: Domestic activity - Zone D, which is now called Middle Neolithic. It is associated with the construction of the tombs and dated to c. 3500-2900 cal. BC (Eogan and Cleary 2017, 41). House 1 was located underneath the mound of the main passage tomb, Tomb 1C, at NE and was just W of Tomb 16 that was partially incorporated into the same mound. It was only partially excavated and its NE edge is cut by the ditch of the rath (ME019-030040-) but it consists of the remains of a possible circular building (diam. c. 7m) containing two hearths. It was built on the bare subsoil and was succeeded immediately by material from the outer part of the great mound. Its habitation layer produced some cattle bones as well as some flints and sherds from 4 decorated vessels. (Eogan and Roche 1997, 52-4, 65)
