Road - unclassified togher

Located in wet, reed-grown ground. This possible togher was discovered in 2010 during archaeological testing (10E0483) in advance of a proposed development (Delaney 2011). There was no trace of the monument at ground level prior to the testing. Excavation of a test trench, exposed, close to the surface, two close-set plank-like fragments of worked wood on a roughly NE−SW alignment. They measured 1.6m by 0.67m and 0.4m by 0.67m. There was a gap of 0.2-0.38m between the two pieces of wood, and the end of each piece of wood flanking the gap appeared cleanly cut or sawn. Five wooden pegs were inserted into a split in the larger piece of wood. These two pieces of worked wood appeared late in date, but other small fragments of wood found close by showed evidence of tool marks which may date to an earlier period. The remains were interpreted as a possible togher, perhaps multi-period in date. It is preserved in situ (Delaney 2011).
