Ringfort - cashel

In average pasture, straddling a terrace on the NE-facing slope of a ridge overlooking Mannin Lake (now drained) to N–NE. There are good views also to SE–SW over undulating grassland; views are less extensive to NE and SW along the spine of the ridge.
This cashel is not shown on the 1838 and 1917 OS 6-inch maps. Circular area (c. 85-90m NE–SW; 90m NW–SE) enclosed by a low, sod-covered stone bank (Wth 3.5-4m) at SW–N, by a ruined field wall at NE–E, and by a combination of a low scarp and a later field wall at E–SE. The enclosing element has been entirely removed on the S arc.
A field wall/townland boundary crosses the interior roughly centrally on a NE–SW axis. Remnants of two other field boundaries traverse the enclosure on a NW–SE axis, partitioning the interior into four roughly equal strips. Two of these partitions survive as drystone walls in the SE half of the interior but are reduced to low stony banks or scarps in the NW half. The partitions coincide with a series of changes in level/terracing in the interior, mirroring the natural slope from SW down to NE. This partitioning of the interior appears to date to the early modern era, and cultivation ridges associated with it are visible in the NW half of the interior. There is a souterrain (MA092-101001-) close to the inner face of the enclosing stone bank at NW.
