Hut site

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on flat marshy commonage on the south- western side of a peat basin. A stream runs past c.3m to E and the site is overlooked by a small hillock immediately to SW. It is situated immediately E of the strong, straight earthen boundary that runs N to S, from ‘Keerigan’s Plot’ to the North Road. The hut is possibly the remains of the northernmost of the two structures shown on first edition of Ordnance Survey six-inch map as small roofed rectangular buildings (L c. 6m) attached to the north-eastern side of the boundary. All that survives is a small rectangular setting of stones (NNW–SSE 4.1m, WNW–ESE 3.9m) on the north-eastern side of the boundary. Two prominent set stones mark the north-eastern and south-eastern corners, and there is also a large boulder at the north-western corner that is set into the face of the earthen boundary. The boundary itself is gapped at this point, but whether this represents an entrance is unclear. The interior is marshy and overgrown with rushes. The whole structure is probably contemporary with or later than the boundary and thus may be of eighteenth- or early nineteenth-century date.
