Fulacht fia

Situated on the north-western bank of a mountain stream (Pollbrandy on Ordnance Survey maps) c. 76.5m NE of MA085-005005- and downslope from it. The mound is situated at the lower end of the out- flow channel from ‘Lough na bPoll’ at the point where it broadens out into a gently sloping flood plain. The fulacht fia is a massive, well-defined U-shaped mound (NNE–SSW 12m, ESE–WNW 9.1m, H 1.7m max. on N side) opening to ESE towards the stream. The southern arm of the mound has been damaged and partly obscured by the boundary wall. Burnt stone is visible at its outer eastern end. The northern arm of the mound is more pronounced and better defined, standing up to 1.7m high along its northern side. Burnt stone is also visible at its outer eastern end. Protruding from the saddle between the two mounds at NW are three large set boulders that appear to form a shallow arc: possibly part of an inner revetment to the trough area? A waisted stone hammer or maul (NMI 2006:82) was found in immediately E of this fulacht fia. Another fulacht fia (MA085-005003-) lies c. 37.5m to N, while within 60m to ENE is a hut (MA085-071----) and an enclosure (MA085-066----) that overlooks this fulacht fia and MA085-005003- and MA085-005002-. The monument is straddled by a nineteenth- or twentieth-century boundary wall running E–W.
