Barrow - mound barrow

In pasture, in an area of undulating terrain on a broad headland flanked to NW by the Palmerstown River, to N by Rathfran Bay and to E by Killala Bay. Situated on top of a low knoll with a steep slope on the SE–SW. The knoll forms the ESE terminal of a low ridge on a roughly NW–SE axis, and provides extensive views: Nephin and the Nephin Beg range are visible at SSW–W, Bartragh Island and Killala Bay at E–SE, with the Ox Mountains in the background.
Circular, platform-like mound (overall diam. 10m; diam. top 7.9m) defined by a scarp (H 0.45m at N, 0.65m at S). There is a slight circular depression in the top of the platform, somewhat off-centre to NE. A small section of the external slope is eroded at the SW revealing a kerb-like concentration of small-medium sized stones at the base of the mound. Two large boulders, which are embedded in the top of the scarp at S, may be the result of field clearance. A berm-like plinth projects 2m from the base of the mound on the W side and 3m on the E side, giving the impression when viewing the E–W profile that the mound sits on a low platform scarped into the knoll slope. However, this berm-like feature does not appear to extend to the N and S sides of the mound, and may simply be the result of modern farm activity.
There are a ringbarrow (MA015-035----) c. 100m to SSW and a mound (MA015-086----) c. 120m to N.
