Hut site

The National Monuments Service's description

Hut-site aligned N-S located at the base of a gentle, SE-facing slope which overlooks a plateau. Appears to be the building that is depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Listed as Knocknascrow 1 (Costello 2016, 306). Present remains consist of a rectangular-shaped area (ext. dims. 6.7m x 5m; int. dims. 5.4m x 3.7m) enclosed by a coursed earth and stone wall (avg. H 0.6m; avg. T 0.65m) with entrance (Wth 0.8m) at centre of E side. The S end wall (ext. H 1.3m; int. H 1.2m) has been partially reconstructed, probably in recent times to afford some shelter to sheep. The building has no internal features apart from wall tumble. A low bank is visible outside the S end wall and continues eastward for approximately 10m, but does not form an enclosure. This bank was formed by material dug-out to create a building platform, and would have acted as a wind-break (Costello 2016, 89).
