The National Monuments Service's description

On the W side of Sarsfield Street within the historic town of Kilmallock (LI047-022001-), 28m E of the town wall (LI047-022006-). Archaeological layer with worked timber was identified by Tracy Collins during archaeological pre-development testing (Licence 05E0033 Ext.) in advance of development of the site into apartments and parking. A protected structure located on the site was retained and incorporated into the new development. The results of the testing were summarised as following; ‘Seven trenches were excavated, four within the extant structures on the site and three to the rear. The trenches varied in depth from 0.8m to 1.4m. Trench 3, measuring 3m by 1m, yielded a thick archaeological layer with organic material, from which one worked timber was recovered. Other finds included animal bone, modern pottery and a clay-pipe stem. The proposed development allowed that the archaeological material found in the testing could be preserved in situ’ (www.excavations.ie 2006; No. 1276, Collins 2006).
