The National Monuments Service's description
In Gogan's account of discovery of the Cnoc na bPoll hoard reference is made to 'evidence of early habitation ... about 400 yards from the find-site' (Gogan 1932, 60). This consisted of 'oak-stakes about three feet long, two inches square in section ... and set about two feet apart' (ibid.); these were found about 10 feet below surface of bog. The extent of this 'ancient paling' was not determined but 'adjoining' it, at a depth of 12 feet, were remains of a flagged causeway (LI035-008---).
Area where causeway indicated on Grogan's map (ibid., opp. 59) now covered by dense coniferous plantation with deep intersecting drains. No trace of any archaeological features were noted in the area.
