Medieval church ruins of Ballynaclogh described in 1840 as following; 'Of the old Church of this Parish only a fragment of one side wall remains about twelve feet [3.65m] in length and four feet [1.2m] in height. The foundations of the other walls are not traceable, so that no idea can now be formed of the extent of this building' (OSL).
Westropp (1904-5, 445) recorded the following details on Ballynaclogh; ‘ ‘Ballenecloighe, an appurtenance of Aney Hospital, 1577 (Fiants, 3250); Ballynecloghy, 1601 (ib., 6487). Baile ne Cloice, Stonestown (O'Donovan). Site - Some fragments of wall, 12 feet [3.65m] by 4 feet [1.2m], stood in the graveyard in 1840'.
In NE quadrant of graveyard (LI024-077002-). Fragment of limestone wall (long-axis N-S; L 5.2m; H 2.2m; T 0.95m). Remains of possible window opening (Wth 1.2m) in centre has an inward splay on N-side indicating that this may be the E-wall. Wall constructed with large stones on exterior and interior face. Stone (dims. 0.2m E-W; 0.15m N-S; T 0.05m) projecting from interior of wall at S-end and located 0.45m above present ground level may indicate the return of S-wall. Grave stones surround church wall. Named on current edition OS 6-inch map as 'Ballynaclogh Church (in ruins)'.
