The National Monuments Service's description
The precise location of a 17th century wall monument dating from 1632 belonging to the O'Mulryan family within the graveyard (LI014-014006-) of Abbey Owney (LI014-014002-) has not been identified. In 1681 Thomas Dineley described the wall tomb which he recorded as following ; 'Here follows a drawing of a monument of mural and table form combined bearing the above line, and first words of the following inscription: - NOBILISSIMUS DNUS GULIELMUS RIIANI PATRIAE SUAE / DE OWNHII NEC NON ANTIQUE RIIANORUM FAMILIAE CAPUT / ET PRINCEPS SIBI UXOEI ET LIBERIS SUIS HANC SEPULCHRI / MOLEM ERIGI CURAVIT '(Shirley et. al. 1865, 281). Westropp (1904-05, 437) recorded that 'to the left as you went up to the altar of the abbatial church' (LI014-014002-). William Brian's (Mulryan's) monument, 1632, was to the right of the altar'. Loeber suggested that the cut limestone often referred to as marble for the memorials in Abington graveyard came from quarries in the barony of Clanwilliam (Loeber 1981, 278). The marble quarry (LI023-339----) of Caherline and Ballyhobin mentioned in the Civil Survey of 1654-56 may have supplied the stone for these memorials (Simington 1938, 74).
