Wall monument

The National Monuments Service's description

The precise location of a wall monument possibly belonging to the FitzWalter family within the graveyard (LI014-014006-) of Abbey Owney (LI014-014002-) has not been identified. In 1681 Thomas Dineley described the wall tomb as following ; 'On the left side the sayd altar, & opposite to the former (LI014-014019-) is seen this monument, but without Inscription' (Shirley et. al. 1865, 281). This tomb was located opposite the O'Mulryan wall monument (LI014-014021-) and was described by Westropp (1904-5, 437) as 'a double recess with trefoil arches and an ornamental hood, topped by a rose'. Loeber suggested that the cut limestone often referred to as marble for the memorials in Abington graveyard came from quarries in the barony of Clanwilliam (Loeber 1981, 278). The marble quarry (LI023-339----) of Caherline and Ballyhobin mentioned in the Civil Survey of 1654-56 may have supplied the stone for these memorials (Simington 1938, 74).
