The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on the grounds of Glenstal Abbey are two armorial plaques (LI007-019002-) removed from the 17th century Walsh family mausoleum (LI007-014017-) at Abington in the 1970s. The two armorial plaques may have been the plaques located over the doorway into the mausoleum of Sir Edmond Walsh of Owney Abbey who died in 1618 and was married to Alice Grace. These plaques were described in 1681 by Thomas Dineley as following; 'Att the West end [of the abbey] whereof is a small Chappel unroof'd belonging to the Walshes, as appears by a fair Monument of black Marble and Inscripcons there. Over the Door at the entrance into it is read as follows under his Armes, dated 1619: 'The Armes of Sr Edmond Walshe Knight, And hys Ladye Ellyce Grace' (Shirley 1865, 279). The coat of arms were described as consisting of 'per chevron gules, argent, and ermine, three pheons erect, impaling a portcullis between three lions rampant; crest, on a helmet a swan sejant proper' (ibid. 277).
