The National Monuments Service's description
Within an oval-shaped pit (dims. 22.4m N-S) , human remains and fragments of a bagpipe were found. Possibly a musician of the O'Mores or O'Kelly's who died in battle on the Hill of Vengeance.
Reference to burials here, described by O'Byrne in 1856 as 'There is a gravel pit situate between the Hill of Vengeance and the 'war-pits' in which was heard the music of a bagpipe by men employed in carting out gravel; on the next day they discovered human remains and the fragments of a bagpipe; consequently the pit is called the Piper's Pit' (O'Byrne 156, 11-12).
