The National Monuments Service's description
Noted in the nave of St Mary's medieval parish church, Callan (KK026-010012-) in 1992 (Farrelly et al. 1992, Unpublished report). A photograph shows a fractured limestone slab, the front panel of a chest tomb. The dexter end of the panel is broken off. The remaining slab is broken vertically down the centre with a further break running across the centre of the dexter side and other cracks running upwards on the dexter side from the central crack. There is a circular depression on the upper sinister side of the panel.
There is a plain border along the top and bottom. The panel is decorated in raised relief with symbols of the Passion. This include, from the dexter to the sinister side, a Greek cross encircled by a crown of thorns, St Peters sword with ear depicted on the blade, a pincers, a scourging pillar entwined with ropes and a bunch of birch twigs. A fluted column with a ringed-cross depicted on the column base, separates the remaining symbols which include a cock on a pot with a scourge on either side and below this a seamless garment with a purse to its right and to the left three dice in the form of an 'L'.
