The National Monuments Service's description
Lying prostrate near the W end of the central aisle of the nave of St Mary’s church (KK026-010012-), Callan. A much weathered tapering effigial tomb (Total L 1.94m; Wth at top 0.64m, tapering to 0.35m at base; min. T 0.1m), covered in lichen, it is possibly of sandstone. The slab is broken, horizontally, beneath the neck of the figure (upper portion max. L 0.33m; lower portion max. L 1.68m) and is very badly spalled. The top and sides are straight and the edge of the base is chamfered, sloping outward. The figure is described by Hunt (1974, vol. 1, 165) as wearing, ‘a mantle over a gown to the feet. One hand held the mantle string and a fold of the garment under the arm. The left hand held the other edge of the mantle. The style is that of the late thirteenth or early fourteenth-century Ossory school’.
