The National Monuments Service's description
The foundations of a series of 17th/18th century houses recorded by Patrick Neary during archaeological monitoring (07E1146) at the E end of Green Street, Kilkenny (Neary 2010, 253-4). These foundations correspond to a large L-shaped block shown fronting a plot between the river and a N-S running lane, that is depicted on John Rocque’s 1758 map of Kilkenny. Green Street formerly led directly onto the medieval Green’s Bridge (KK019-026040-), which was replaced by the present bridge (NIAH 12004077) 40m downstream to the SE in 1766, following the 'Great Flood' two years previously (Farrelly et al. 1993, 35). Green’s Gate (KK019-026001-) formerly stood at the eastern end of Green’s Street, fortifying the crossing-point (Farrelly et al. 1993, 6). Green’s Street was connected to the new bridge by a road which turned sharply S at the E end of Green’s Street and the buildings at the S side of the E end of Green Street were probably demolished to make way for the construction of this new road. Further foundations relating to the structures probably remain in situ beyond the limit of the monitored excavation.
