Water mill - vertical-wheeled

In the N portion of Kilkenny City, on the E bank of the River Nore, c. 50m N of the present Green’s Bridge but originally, as illustrated on Rocque’s 1758 map, immediately S of the former medieval bridge (KK019-026040-). The Civil Survey (1654-6) describing corn mills in Kilkenny lists, ‘The other standing upon Grenes Bridge’ and names ‘Bishop of Ossorie and others’ as the tenant ‘when ye Towne was Taken’, in 1650 (Simington (ed.) 1942, vol. 6, 549). According to Doyle (1985, 150), ‘One arch of the old Greens Bridge, which was destroyed in the great flood of 1764, still stands. This arch spans the upper mill stream. In 1758 there was a mill beside this arch. Today nothing remains of it except some stone facing in the side of the mill stream which would suggest that a vertical mill wheel once turned there. This old mill might have been the original mill of St. John’s priory (KK019-026066-).
