Water mill - unclassified

The National Monuments Service's description

On the floor of an E-W river valley, with hills on either side, in rough grazing. The small river flows westward c. 10m S of the monument and eventually joins the River Goul c. 2.5km to the NW.
The mill is depicted on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as being ‘in ruins’ so is likely to be at least 18th in date if not earlier. It is located in the SE quadrant of a rectangular enclosure defined by a bank and outer fosse. The probable entrance (Wth 6m) into this enclosure is at the E end of the N side. The mill building (ext. L 14.2m; Wth 6.4m) is aligned roughly N-S, with the remains of a millrace (Wth 2.3m) along the S side of mill building. The collapsed walls (S wall T c. 1m; S wall int. H 0.47m; ext. H 0.95m) are largely grass covered with a lot of tumble. There is a possible internal division c. 8m from the S end of the mill, though this portion of the building is obscured by scrub. The millrace appears to have been diverted from the river at the SW and rejoins it at the SE. It is defined on the N side by the enclosing bank of the mill enclosure (Wth at top 0.7m; overall Wth 2m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.7m) and to the S by a low bank (Wth at top 0.8m; overall Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.29m).
Also within the enclosure, at a right angle to the NW of the mill, is an ancillary building (ext. L c. 15.3m; Wth 7.8m) which has an internal division (int. Wth 2.85m E-W) at the W end. It is built of rough limestone rubble with a crude lime mortar with a coarse aggregate, though only the lower two courses of the E gable (wall T 0.85-0.9m; ext. H 0.45m) are clearly visible, the other collapsed walls are grass covered. It possibly has opposing doors at the E end of both the N and S walls.
