The National Monuments Service's description
Internal diam. 19m N-S, 19.6 E-W
This severely denuded circular caher is located on a terrace on the S slopes of Farraniaragh mountain, overlooking Darrynane Bay to S. Overgrowth conceals much of the site and collapse abuts the external face of its enclosing wall. This is constructed of drystone masonry, its inner and outer facing enclosing a rubble core. It is 1.3m wide and is preserved to a maximum height of 1.5m. A gap in the wall at SE, through which a trackway runs, may mark the location of the original entrance. The interior of the caher is filled with a scatter of loose stone, heavily concentrated in a rectangular area at E. This measures 3.7m x 3.5m, and may represent the foundations of a rectangular hut (KE106-051001-).
A souterrain (KE106-051002-) is locally reputed to exist at this site, but its exact location could not be determined. Stone from the caher was used in the building of nearby houses (local information).
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 584. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
