The National Monuments Service's description
The remains of a subcircular ironworking furnace (1.25m N-S; 1m E-W; D 0.35m), with a short flue (L 0.35m) extending to the N, was discovered during archaeological monitoring in advance of a housing development and was excavated in 2004 under licence No. 04E1267 (Coyne 2007, 178). The furnace was filled with charcoal and a large lump of iron slag (ibid.).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
