In woodland on the W bank of Galway's River, immediately downstream from a small waterfall. The remains of this iron-working site consist of a roughly rectangular random rubble blast furnace (H 1m; int. dims. 1.55m N-S; 0.9m E-W) set against a face of boulders and a natural rock at W. An opening, with natural rock to each side, is at the N end of the E wall. A bellows aperture (Wth 0.4m; L 0.9m; H 0.25m) cuts through the base of the rock to the S of the opening in the E wall. A large slab (1.25m x 0.6m) lies on the floor of the interior. Rocks strewn in the area between the furnace and the waterfall may have supported a system of wooden lades. A trackway (Wth 1.7m), with embedded stones in its surface, is evident c. 10m to the W of the ironworks and it leads N towards the lakeshore. Rynne (2001, 118) states that it seems likely that the Derrycunihy furnace dates 'to the late seventeenth century, or at the earliest, to the period after the destruction of Irish ironworks in 1641'.
