Ogham stone

The National Monuments Service's description

In rough pasture, at the foot of a SE-facing rocky slope overlooking Lough Reagh. An upright stone (H 1.3m; 0.9m x 0.25m), with a N-S axis, is roughly rectangular in plan and elevation. An ogham inscription occurs along the NW edge, continues faintly along the top and extends to the upper half of the SE edge. The stone was discovered in June 1995 and the inscription was recorded on 30 November 1995. The stone, which had been lying in the bed of a nearby stream when discovered, was subsequently erected adjacent to the place of discovery by the OPW. The inscription reads ANM BERAQ MACI UN(D)….. [U, I or E] Q(ILL), which means The name of Berach son of Und……q(ill). Letters in square brackets are suggestions while those in parentheses are likely. When discovered the SE edge of the stone was lying in the stream and it is likely that prolonged exposure to water action accounts for the loss of the second half of the inscription. There is a standing stone (KE073-050----) 18m to the S.
