The National Monuments Service's description
Internal diam. 25.4m N-S, 24.9m E-W
This roughly circular univallate rath is located on top of a steep rise directly NW of Killorglin town, overlooking the River Laune and its estuary to NE. It consists of an earth and stone bank and an external fosse which is best preserved along its W half. The land falls away steeply from the E and S sides of the site, and a terraced area, 7.5m wide and 3.2m high, abuts the enclosing element at E. The fosse is 1.2m deep below external ground level and measures 2m wide. The bank rises 3.5m high externally, is 1.1m wide and falls .7m to the interior. A 4.3m wide entrance gap is located at SSE. A second gap occurs at NNE. The overgrown interior of the fort slopes down from W to E. A souterrain (KE056-018001-) is locally reputed to be located in the SW quadrant of the rath's interior. No surface trace of it is apparent.
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 484. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
