The National Monuments Service's description
This site is marked on the 1842 and 1916 OS maps as 'The Garrison Fort'. It is situated in low-lying land towards the end of a long bohareen which has defaced the E side of the garrison. This garrison fort consists of a rectangular area enclosed by two banks and a fosse to the S and W. According to Westropp (1909, 12), the N side had three banks and two fosses, but this side has been so levelled that only two very low, wide earthen banks and a shallow fosse can be distinguished.
The internal diameter of the rectangular area measures c 78m N-S and c 65m E-W. The external height of the outer W bank measures 1.15m, the internal height of the bank .6m, and its width at the base 3.6m. The width of the fosse measures 3.7m. The external height of the inner bank measures .75m, the internal height of the bank 1.2m and its width at the base 4m.
The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 984. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
