Ogham stone

The National Monuments Service's description

One of seven ogham stones (KD032-044001- to KD032-044007-) recorded by Macalister (1945, 28-9 (23 – No. V)) at 'Killeen Cormac' burial ground (KD032-044----). The stone was found under one of revetment-slabs of the central mound and was re-erected in the burial ground. Macalister (op. cit.) described it has having 'very fine scores . . . set at an unusual slope with reference to the stemline. Only two vowel notches remain.' He transcribed the inscription: AV[.]S[.]S[.]MAQ[.]S. A roughly rectangular, but tapering, lichen covered, earthfast stone (H 1m; L at top 0.51m E-W; Wth 0.35m N-S; narrowing/tapering to L at base 0.37m E-W; Wth 0.3m N-S) has the ogham inscription on its NE corner. The N and S faces of the stone are fairly smooth, while the E and W ends have a rougher finish.

This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.
