According to O’Conor, jointly compiling the OSL in 1839 (Herity 2002, 198 (279-80)), ‘It [a standing stone: KD029-014001-] stood in a small earthen moat, but now lies on the ground, having been thrown down about 2 or 3 years ago.’ The 'moat', which may have been a barrow, was described by Fitzgerald (1899-1902, 358) as, ‘now levelled’. Walshe (1931, 137) was told that when the stone was thrown down, “ashes” and “Dutch pipes” of clay were discovered beneath its base. No visible surface trace of the ‘moat’ survives.
