The National Monuments Service's description

During the course of excavations in the W half of the inner enclosure at Dún Aonghasa (GA110-039----) a large limpet shell midden (3m N-S; 2.5m E-W) was revealed when wall spill and the underlying abandonment layers in the SW quadrant of Structure 2 (GA110-039007-) were removed. The midden extended over the ruined foundations of the W wall of Structure 5 (GA110-039006-) and clearly belonged to a phase of activity post-dating it. Finds retrieved included a sherd of abraded pottery and two used cobbles. The midden could be contemporary with the occupation of Structure 2 (early medieval date), but equally could belong to a very late phase of activity (Cotter vol. 1, 309-10, 313).
