The National Monuments Service's description
Associated with the early ecclesiastical remains at the SE end of Cruach na Cara/St Macdara’s Island. What survives are the foundations and/or lower courses of three possible clochans/houses: (a, GA076-020011-) circa 75m NE of the oratory (GA076-020001-) are the lower courses of a subcircular clochan (6.6m by 5.8m) set into the hillslope; (b, GA076-020012-) adjacent to it is an oval structure (12m by 5m); (c, GA076-020013-) finally, c. 50m to NE is a third example, square in plan (L/Wth 5.5m) and of similar construction. (Bigger 1896, 111)
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
