The National Monuments Service's description
In the centre of an early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA017-024002-). According to Neary (1914, 125, no. 100), it was known locally as 'Clocmakeeran Church' and was the site of a medieval parish church. In his time (ibid.), 'its foundations [could] be plainly traced' and it measured '70 ft. [21.35m] E. to W., by 26 ft. [7.9m] N. to S. [with] walls ... 3 ft [0.9m] thick, and the foundation of a cross wall, 24 ft. [7.3m] from the E., seem[ing] to mark the division of nave and chancel'. All that now survives is the outline of the 'chancel', a small rectangular building (E-W; L 4.5m, Wth 6.2m). Only its N wall (Wth 0.9m, H 1.4m) survives above foundation level but there are traces of a dividing wall, running N-S at W end, probably the 'division' referred to above. The only surviving architectural feature is a fragment of a traceried window lying outside S wall. (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 103-4)
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
