The National Monuments Service's description
Situated in a hollow, waterlogged field of pasture bounded by a stream in the ENE. Colmanstown Castle was demolished in 1960. A pier of the gateway into the castle survived into the early 1970s (Healy 1974, 23-4). The site today is marked by stonier ground. McDix (1898, 40, 78) describes two individual structures at Colmanstown, a gateway or barbican and remains of a tower house. The gateway was formed of two pillars or piers with a broad arch; the tower house was square in plan, rising to three storeys with a barrel vault over the ground floor and a plastered interior. There were fireplaces and wall presses on first and second floors.
Not visible at ground level.
