The National Monuments Service's description
Excavations carried out in 1975-76 revealed two earthen banks with palisades of post and wattle work probably constructed to act as flood barriers prior to the construction of the town wall. Finds included textiles and leatherwork, personal ornaments and an Anglo-Saxon coins of 10th-century date (Wallace 1975-76, 30).
