This church appears to have been built on the site of an earlier 17th century parish (DG053-043001-) church with adjoining graveyard (DG053-043002-) with earliest graveslab (DG053-043003-) dating from c. 1620 (SMR file 1996). This church and graveyard was described in the 1654 Civil Survey of Donegal as 'there is therein a Towne called Litterkenny (DG053-042) wch hath a Markett every ffryday,and two faires in the yeare wth a Larg dwelling Stone house haveing a Bawne of fower fla[n]ckers a fair Church And a bridg[e] at the End of the sd. towne over the sd. River of Swolly'. There are two graveslabs (DG053-043003-) located approx 12m S of the C of I church, one of which has a large armorial plaque but the inscription has been worn away and there is a similar slab closeby which may be 17th century in date. According to the tourist information panel about Letterkennny town one of the oldest graves in this graveyard belongs to Henry Wray who died in August 1652. Unable to locate this memorial within the graveyard at Conwal church.
