The National Monuments Service's description
Circular redoubt on high ground in middle of Whiddy Island; two similar redoubts (CO118-077---; CO105-032---) to SW and NE. Indicated on OS 6-inch map (1842) as 'Center Redoubt'. Defended by fosse (Wth 8.5m; D c. 10m) with outer circular glacis (Wth 40m). Parapet wall (Wth 4m; H 1.5m) around inner perimeter of fosse enclosing level circular (diam. 68m) area. Low arcs of gun placements visible along SW parapet wall. At centre, three rectangular ranges of single-storey barracks all barrel-vaulted, originally covered with hipped slate roofs. Central range (Wth 12.75m) wider than ranges (Wth 6.6m) on either side. Part of NE range used as private residence. Covered well with original iron pump to SE of central range. According to Kerrigan (1981, 5) built by 1806 to house 150 men and mounted 12 guns.
