Country house

The National Monuments Service's description

Ruined late 18th/early 19th century 3-storey house over basement; designed by Abraham Hargrave the elder for W.H. Moore-Hodder (Glin 1988, 52). Entrance front (SW) of 5 bays; central 3-bay breakfront. Central vertical half-door flanked by sidelights; four engaged Ionic columns support wide fanlight over door and sidelights, now partially obscured by Victorian glass porch. Limestone band course divides basement (windowless at front) from ground floor. Roof collapsed, was hipped with central valley; limestone cornice. Rear similar to front with basement windows. Round-headed stairway window in SE elevation; 'good cantilevered stone main staircase with very fine wrought iron balustrade' (ibid.). Weatherslating on all elevations. Remains of 2-storey house incorporated into farmbuildings to S; according to local information it was used by Hodder family before they built the present ruined house; later used as Steward's house with dairy at ground level; now abandoned. Tower (CO099-013---) to W. Thrashing mill (CO099-091---) at entrance to south. Inscribed boundary stone (CO099-057001-) in estate wall to SW dated 'first day of January 1715'.
