The National Monuments Service's description
On 1842 OS 6-inch map as 'Turret' to W of Hoddersfield House (CO099-060---), in open fields. Ruined square structure (3.2m N-S; 3.2m E-W) entered by stone steps on E elevation. Interior infilled. Commanding view of sourrounding countryside. According to local information used as platform from which to shoot deer. Smith (1750, vol. 1, 209) refers to it as 'a gazebo, which commands a prospect of the harbour of Cork, the ocean, and a vast tract of sea coast'.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
