The National Monuments Service's description
According to Healy (1988, 90) house on site of Aghada Castle (Coleman 1915, 169). This appears to be castle shown on 1587 map (Hayes-McCoy 1964, 25) and named 'Longeforde'; but this name not listed by Power (1940, 16-7) who gives Aghada as Acadh Fhada (the Long Field). 'Longeforde' probably derived from 'longphort' (a Viking naval camp) (Edwards 1990, 172); the name survives at nearby Long Point.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
