Market-house

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on the medieval quays, to the north-west of Watergate (CO067-029012-). A sketch of the building in 1681 shows a two-storey structure with open arcading on the ground floor, transverse attic windows and a central cupola on the roof (Hayman 1879, 34). It was known as 'The Exchange' (ibid.). Demolished c. 1750 when new quays were constructed (Zajac et al. 1995, 107). A courthouse was built on the site in the late 1840s (CO067-029014-). Archaeological testing around the perimeter of the courthouse uncovered a masonry wall running parallel to the courthouse wall to the rear of the building, which may have been the foundation wall of the market house. In another test pit to the rear a cobbled surface was exposed, which may also be associated with the market house.
