The National Monuments Service's description
Site of Short Castle or Castle Gar. No visible surface trace of castle; area now part of Mallow town. Scene of intense fighting in 1642 after which it was destroyed (Grove White 1905-25 vol. 4, 82-3; Gillman 1896a, 22-4).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
