The National Monuments Service's description

Exact location of castle uncertain; Castlecor House (CO024-005---), now demolished, may have occupied its site. According to Smith (1750, 299), 'near it [Castlecor House] is a pleasant park, where are the remains of an ancient fortification, in the midst of which stood a castle of the Barry's'. Bowman (1934, 427) interprets 'ancient fortification' to mean the ringfort (CO024-007---) c. 500m to SE and thereby places castle in ringfort. According to O'Flanagan (1844, 151), Castlecor House 'was built on the site of an ancient castle'.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
