The National Monuments Service's description

During excavation of ringfort (CO023-15701-), a pre-fort linear trench (D 0.9m; Wth 0.58m at base, 1.3m at top) was found crossing interior off-centre on NE-SW axis (Twohig 1990, 19-30). Trench excavated for distance of 40m and found to extend both NE and SW of ringfort; excavated cutting through bank in SE quadrant of ringfort revealed that 'the linear trench had provided the building material for a small field bank, the remains of which had survived adjacent to the trench' and that it had been only 'partly backfilled'; 'the bank had survived to a height of about 0.3m' when bank of ringfort was built (ibid.). Similar trenches (CO023-15802-) associated with ringforts (CO023-15801-; CO023-15901-) c. 350m to NE.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
