The National Monuments Service's description
No visible surface trace but, according to local information, site of a castle of the McAuliffes. In demesne of Newmarket House (14888), just S of where 'Fair Field' is marked on 1937 OS 6-inch map. Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 362) noted that there was formerly a castle on 'The Mount near Mr Aldworth's Lodge' (14888). According to Bowman (1934, 170), castle was called 'Caislean an Cnuic' and was located in 'Pairceanna a cnuic - the Hill fields' c. 800m S of Newmarket House. Castle forfeited as part of McAuliffe estate after Desmond Rebellion (Bowman ibid.).
