Ringfort - cashel

At the top of a steep N-facing slope, with wide views out from N-E-SE. Hachured on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. This circular cashel (int. diams. 21.6m E-W; 21.3m N-S; ext. dims. 37.4m N-S; 31.5m E-W) is defined by a poorly preserved stone wall (Wth 1.9-2m; H c. 0.4m) and collapsed rubble. The inner wall-face is traceable intermittently from W-N-E. The perimeter has been damaged by field-clearance activity, especially from E-S where the wall is obscured by a grass- and moss-covered bank of spoil (combined Wth 7-9m; H 0.4-0.9m). There is a souterrain (CL017-130002-) in the W sector of the partly tree-covered interior. Westropp (1913, 241) noted ‘a trace of a hut-enclosure’ against the cashel wall to the N of this souterrain. A low grass-covered wall (L 5m) running E-W through the E sector is probably a remnant of a later field system. Overlying the collapsed cashel wall at SSW is a circular stone cell (int. diam. 1.6m) defined by a grass-covered wall footing (Wth 0.7m; max. H 0.4m), but open to the N.
