Children's burial ground

The National Monuments Service's description

In pasture on a low rise c. 105m W of the S-flowing Ballymacraven River. Depicted on the first edition (1840) of the OS 6-inch map as an oval enclosure named ‘Calluragh Burial Gd’. Indicated on the Cassini edition (1916) of the OS 6-inch map as a dashed oval-shaped area named ‘Calluragh Children’s Burial Ground’. O’Donovan listed ‘Lis-Callooragh in the Townland of Callooragh’ among ‘some small burial places for children’ in the parish of Kilmanaheen (Comber 1997, 105). Classified as a burial ground in the RMP (1996). A sub-rectangular shaped enclosure (22m N-S) is defined by a gentle scarp (H 0.25-1.15m) enclosing an irregularly shaped raised area (13m N-S; 12m E-W). The scarp is lowest to the W and highest at the E with indistinct edges. The raised interior slopes gently down to SE and has c. 150 undressed stone grave-markers (av. dims. L 0.4m; Wth 0.4m; T 0.15m).
