Ringfort - cashel

The National Monuments Service's description

At the top of a broad hill in pasture with wide views all around, within a large multiperiod field
system (CL009-059001-). Hachured on the 1842 and 1920 eds. of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as
‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A subcircular cashel (31.4m E-W; 28.8m N-S) defined by the remains
of a double-faced wall (av. Wth 2m; int. H c. 0.1m; ext. H 0.8-1.3m), with a well-preserved outer face
of large stones (L c. 1m; H 0.2m).

At E there is a grass-covered and partly rubble-filled entrance (Wth 0.9m). 1.1m into the passage it
widens (to 2m) and there is one step (H 0.4). From here the passage continues straight (L 2.4m), with
piers (c. 1.1m E-W; c. 0.7m N-S; H c. 0.3m) extending out along the length on each side from the
inner wall-face. Continuing W to the centre of the cashel is a path lined by stones (max. L 0.7m; Wth
0.2m; H 0.3m) spaced apart on either side. This path terminus is also marked by stones.

A souterrain (CL009-059103-) occupies the SW quadrant and in the NW quadrant there are house
foundations (CL009-059104-). A ramped entrance (Wth 1m) at NW with associated spoil mounds
appears to be a later addition and there is an animal gap at W. An enclosure (CL009-059105-) is
attached to the cashel exterior at NE. A cairn (CL009-059029-) lies c. 152m to the WSW.
