Ringfort - cashel

On a gently undulating karst plateau in rough pasture, within a large multiperiod field system (CL009-001001-). This subcircular or oval cashel (int. dims. 47.4m NNW–SSE; 40m ENE–WSW) is defined by a stone wall (original Wth 1.4–1.5m) that has generally collapsed to form a grass-covered stony spread (Wth 2.5–4m; ext. H 0.5–0.6m; int. H 0.3–0.4m), which is visible from S through W and N to E. The outer wall-face can generally be traced all round. A gap (Wth 0.8m) at N, lined on either side by outward-facing dressed stones, may be the original entrance. An old grass-covered N-S running field wall cuts across the E half of the interior. Field walls extending off the cashel at E and SSW may be contemporary with the field system. A later drystone wall has been built along the perimeter from S to NW. Drystone walls also cut through the SE quadrant. A possible enclosure (CL009-001057-) lies c. 79m to the WNW.
