Ringfort - cashel

Within a large subdivided field of pasture, with limestone pavement to the N, within a relict field system (CL008-004001-) that is part of a larger multiperiod field system (CL008-109001-). Hachured on the 1842 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and indicated on the 1920 ed. This subrectangular cashel (c. 30.5m NW-SE; c. 30m NE-SW) is defined by a double-faced stone wall (est. Wth 3m; int. H 0.25-0.55m; ext. H 0.25-1.85m) and associated tumble (combined Wth 4.5m). The outer wall-face is visible at N, S and SW, surviving up to three courses in height. The wall is nearly levelled (L 10m) at NE. No trace was evident of the 'very small cist or slab enclosure, 3 feet [0.91m] wide, and, apparently, once embedded in the wall' recorded by Westropp (1905, 357), who noted its age was doubtful. A house site (CL008-010002-) occupies the centre of the interior and field-clearance rubble is visible in the SW sector. Outside the cashel at S, a short length of stone-facing, one course high running NW-SE, appears to be associated with the relict field system. Another cashel (CL008-012----) lies c. 75m to the NE, a possible cashel (CL008-011----) lies c. 73m to the SE and there is an enclosure (CL008-128----) c. 84m to the SW.
