Concentric enclosure

The National Monuments Service's description

On a S-facing slope in an upland area with Ailwee Hill rising to the W. Not indicated on the 1840 or 1916 editions of the OS 6-inch map. A concentric enclosure (overall diam. 46.7m) defined by a bank of earth containing a lot of stone (diam. 23m E-W; 21.5m N-S; bank at N: Wth 3.1m; int. H 0.34m; ext. H 0.54m) and an outer bank of similar construction but less well preserved (at SW: Wth 2.34m; int. H 0.19m; ext H 0.51m). The outer bank is surmounted from NW to SE by a well-built later drystone wall. The area between the banks is wide and level at N (Wth 11.7m) and sloping significantly at S (Wth 13.3m). The interior is uneven and there is no definite entrance. At E two parallel tumbled, probably later, walls extend E from the inner bank to the outer. This may not be an original feature. A contemporary wall (Wth 2.57m; H 0.23-0.3m) abuts the outer bank at SW and meanders S where it meets another possibly contemporary wall aligned N-S. A drystone-walled enclosure (CL006-037----) adjoins immediately to the E. This is one of a number of fields to NE, E and SE clustered around the concentric enclosure and all are likely to be associated. A small enclosure (CL006-160----) lies 10m to the NW.
