Megalithic tomb - wedge tomb

On a generally level area of limestone pavement and rough pasture, on a W-facing slope with reasonable views SW-NW, although inhibited in the foreground by a drystone field boundary, c. 25m to W. Identified in 2017 by Dr Sharon Parr, Scientific Officer of the Burren Programme. It is a roughly rectangular area (3m N-S; 5m E-W) defined by an in situ upright orthostat (H 0.85m; L 2.55m; T 0.08m) which forms a definite E side. Immediately perpendicular to W, a single orthostat (min. H 0.32m; L 0.72m; T 0.06m) has collapsed inwards on the N-side, and may have formed part of a backstone. A flat, possible collapsed orthostat adjacent to W may have formed the western half of the N side. To the immediate S, a series of four parallel orthostats (largest H 0.7m; L 1.16m; T 0.06m) have fallen inwards to E, with the easternmost touching the inside of the large orthostat. It is likely that these four stacked flags formed the western side of the structure. A long, broad earthfast stone (H 0.05m; L 0.88m; T 0.27m) is located to the immediate W. A low drystone wall (max. H 0.4m; L 2.3m; T at top 0.5m; T at base 0.8-0.9m) forms a right-angle to E of the large orthostat, at the N end. It could have been part of a lamb fold/shelter that reused the megalithic structure to one side.
