Ringfort - cashel

In elevated rocky pasture, with higher ground to the NW and within an extensive multiperiod field system (CL005-160001-). Indicated as an enclosure on the 1916 OS 6-inch map. Marked on Tim Robinson’s Burren map (1977). Listed as ‘Enclosure (possible)’ on the RMP (1996). A square cashel (33.5m N-S; 33m E-W) defined by a partially surviving drystone wall (Wth 1.1-1.3m), reduced to a rubble spread (Wth 1.4-1.8m) in places. Short stretches of outer wall-facing survive on the N (H 0.2-0.4m), E (H 0.7m), and S (H 0.8m) sides. No inner wall-facing survives. Most of the W wall appears to be modern. The entrance (Wth 1.15m) is in the E wall and is defined by a slab on its N side (H 0.4m) and stonework on its S side (H 0.45-0.9m). The interior is slightly raised to the E and centre, and a low upright stone in this area may indicate a former internal feature. There is a possible hut site (CL005-312----) in the NW quadrant of the cashel. A cairn (CL005-160048-) with two cists (CL005-160028-; CL005-160047-) is located c. 30m to the S.
